Speaking at IAPP DPI:UK 2025

IAPP UK 2025: panel on adtech

In London on 12 March for the IAPP DPI25 conference? Come to our great panel (ICO rep, UK lawyer, US lawyer & me) on “PETs, AI and Cookieless: Framework for New Adtech and Metrics Approaches”. It is quite the panel, with a super list of topics:

Speakers:
Hannah Crowther (Partner for Data Protection & Privacy at Bristows LLP, fantastic on digital advertising law and data protection in general)
Alasdair Macdonald (Senior Technical Advisor at the UK Information Commissioner’s Office, with a background as a founder also of an adtech product)
Peter Swire (leading privacy & cyberlaw scholar, US lawyer, counsel at Alston & Bird, and with an amazing experience on privacy-enhancing technologies [PETs] and digital advertising)
– and me.

Digital advertising and analytics are undergoing significant evolutions, with many solutions touting their use of privacy-enhancing technologies, of generative AI for ultimate ad tailoring or of a cookieless approach. What are the legal implications, and how do regulators such as the ICO approach this issue?
This session will look at the positions of regulators and case law and will feature a deep-dive on topics such as (U.K.) GDPR, PECR / ePrivacy. It is a forward-looking session, as we expect (as do many in the digital economy industry) that the use of PETs, AI and cookieless technologies will become increasingly prevalent in the future.

What you will learn:
– The choice of technology has a significant impact on the legal implications.
– (Maximalist?) approaches by regulators versus desirability of privacy-friendlier options.
– The U.K. ICO’s regulatory sandbox is an interesting option to explore for innovative projects.

Session starting at 2:15pm UK time on 12 March 2025.
